Our waitress brought cheese muffins to our table along with our waters. Let me side step for a second. I happen to have a deep love for the cheese biscuits from Red Lobster. I don't eat there more than once every two or more years, but that's the main thing I look forward to when I go! Therefore, I have a very high standard set for anything that resembles cheese biscuits. Back to Jim 'N Nicks.. The muffins were warm (like they had come right from the oven), crisp on the outside, and fluffy-falling apart MM-MM-good! They were mini's, so it made us feel better since we both ate more than one. ;)
We ordered the full rack of ribs with their "Mac The Cheese" and slow cooked collards. Don't worry.. we split the meal! I find that these days portion control in restaurants has gotten waayyy out of hand, so I split a meal with someone whenever I can. When they came to the table, oh my, I almost melted right there! They looked beautiful!! As a foodie, I eat with my eyes first (I'm pretty sure everyone does), and let me just say: those babies looked divine!
They slow cook their ribs in a secret rub for hours on end, and it is so worth it. The meat practically fell right off of the bone and it was tender as all get out! My mouth is watering right now! The mac and cheese was probably the best I've ever tasted coming from a restaurant. I normally skip over it on the menu because most of the time they load it with powdered or processed cheese, and that just doesn't sit well with me. But last night, I just had a feeling about it. Or it could have just been that it was late and I was tired... nevertheless, it was really good! Their collards were pretty good. I don't have anything to go by except for what my mom cooks at home, so I'll give them a A- just because they aren't as good as hers. :)
After our delicious meal, we decided to end the night by going to Shakes, a place that reminds me of Checkers back home. It's a walk-up or drive-thru food place that has some amazing concretes and cows. A cow is ice cream blended with your favorite soft drink, and they're almost better than a shake! We got a Strawberry Shortcake concrete and a Reese's peanut butter concrete. Both were delicious, but the Strawberry Shortcake took the cake for me - no pun intended. It had large chunks of strawberries mixed in it along with spongecake, making it a yummy concoction.
So, if you're ever around the Fort Walton Beach - Destin area, try out Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q and finish it off with a concrete or "cow" from Shakes!
Happy eating,
~HB~
