Mayonnaise is used for more than you think!

Have any of you  watched the movie "The Help"? I like the movie - definitely not because of the racial partisanship or the lack of women standing up to the downright annoying, pain-in-the-tail Hilly. I like it because it's about  a girl that wants to make things change, and two women (actually 13 in all) that are willing to help her make it possible. When I watched the movie I laughed, gasped, and cried throughout it all! And of course, since it's based in MS I had to see what all the fuss was about!! ;)

Anyway, after watching it multiple times since Christmas, I decided that I wanted to read the book. I went off to my library, got a copy, and read it...in about 72 hours! I thoroughly enjoyed the majority of the book! In one of the chapters, when writing the "Miss Myrna" columns (I think) they talk about the nasty, sticky residue that stays put on the bottom of any type of glassware. You know? The stuff that never seems to go away and is a royal pain in the rear?? The "cure" for it completely shocked me! Mayonnaise! Yes, that's right...when you rub mayonnaise (just a little bit) onto the sticky stuff, then wash it, the glass is clean and stick-free!

How do I know for sure? Last week, my mom wanted to save some nice glass jars that had fruit in them. She had been soaking them for about 2 weeks in hot water, and was having a time trying to get all of the glue and paper off of them.  I was working on something at the table and when she let out an exasperated sigh, I asked what was wrong. When she told me I shot up and said "Hey! 'The Help' said that mayonnaise would remove it!" Neither of us really thought that it would work, but she got the jar out of the fridge, slathered it on, and sure enough *dah da da dahhhh* it came off!! We still laugh every time we see a jar of mayonnaise. ;)

So, here's to hoping your next glass-goo cleaning goes more smoothly than the last time!

Happy eating,
~HB~
